Bare area for a rectangle. Add wastage for flooring or tiling, and split irregular rooms into rectangles.

Area, the foundation of any estimate

For a rectangular space, area is simply length times width. That single figure drives almost every material estimate — flooring, tiling, carpet, paint and turf are all priced by the square metre or square foot.

area = length × width · perimeter = 2 × (length + width)

Because materials are sold in both metric and imperial units, the calculator shows the area in the other system too, and adds an optional cost so you can price a job as you measure it.

Worked example

A room 5 m by 4 m is 20 m² — about 215 square feet — with an 18 m perimeter. At $30 per square metre, the flooring would cost around $600 before any wastage.

Measuring with confidence

Accurate area starts with accurate measuring. Measure at floor level, take the longest points, and split complex rooms into simple rectangles you can add together. A small over-estimate is usually safer than coming up short on materials.

Handy reminders

  • One m² ≈ 10.76 ft². Match the unit your supplier quotes.
  • Add wastage. Around 10% for flooring; more for patterns and diagonals.
  • Perimeter for trims. Skirting and edging are sold by length, not area.

Frequently asked questions

How do I handle an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles, work out each area separately, and add them together. The same trick handles alcoves and bay windows.
Should I add for wastage?
For flooring and tiling, yes — typically around 10%, more for diagonal layouts or lots of cuts. This calculator gives the bare area, so add your margin on top.
How are square metres and square feet related?
One square metre is about 10.76 square feet. The calculator shows both so you can match whichever unit your materials are sold in.
What is the perimeter useful for?
Perimeter helps when buying skirting, edging, coving or trim, which are sold by length rather than area.
