How an exact age is calculated

Age is the gap between two calendar dates. The calculator subtracts the day, then the month, then the year — borrowing days from the previous month and months from the year whenever a figure would go negative, exactly as you would by hand.

The totals below restate that same gap in different units: every completed month, every full week, and every elapsed day. Because real months vary from 28 to 31 days and leap years add a day, comparing actual dates is more accurate than assuming an average month length.

Worked example

Someone born on 14 March 1990, measured on 6 June 2026, is 36 years, 2 months and 23 days old — roughly 434 months, 1,890 weeks or 13,233 days, with their next birthday about 281 days away.

Handy ways to use it

An age calculator is useful well beyond birthdays. It answers eligibility questions (school years, pensions, age limits), works out how long ago something happened, and counts down to a date that matters — all without the off-by-one slips that catch people doing it in their head.

Things worth knowing

  • Set the second date freely. Put it in the past or future to find an age on any day, not just today.
  • Months are not all equal. The same number of days can be a different number of months depending on which months they fall in.
  • Time zones. Calculations use whole days, so a birth time of day does not change the result.

Frequently asked questions

How are the months and days worked out?
The calculator counts whole calendar months and days, borrowing the correct number of days from the previous month when needed. That is why a "month" is not always 30 days.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. Because it compares the actual calendar dates, leap days are counted naturally in the totals and in the days-until-birthday figure.
Why does the total in months differ from years × 12?
The totals are independent views of the same span. Total months counts every completed month; years × 12 plus leftover months will match it, but it can look different at a glance.
Can I find an age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the second date to any date you like — the calculator measures the gap between the two dates, not just up to today.
