Distance

Pace is time per distance; speed is distance per time. Build mileage gradually and listen to your body.

Pace, speed and time

Runners usually think in pace — minutes per kilometre or mile — while speed in km/h or mph is the same information flipped around. From a distance and a time, both fall out directly.

pace = time ÷ distance · speed = distance ÷ time

Knowing your pace lets you set targets and predict finish times: hold a steady pace and the time for any distance is just pace times distance. The calculator also converts between per-km and per-mile pace.

Worked example

Running 5 km in 25 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per kilometre — a speed of 12 km/h, or about 8:03 per mile.

Training by pace

Pace turns a vague effort into a plan. Easy runs, tempo work and intervals each sit in their own pace range, and pacing evenly is often the difference between a strong finish and fading early. Treat the numbers as a guide, not a master.

Handy to know

  • Even splits pay off. Starting too fast usually costs more later.
  • Predict finish times. Pace × distance gives a quick target.
  • Build gradually. Increase distance and intensity in small steps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (minutes per km or mile) — lower is faster. Speed is distance per time (km/h or mph) — higher is faster. They describe the same effort two ways.
How do I convert pace between km and miles?
Multiply a per-kilometre pace by about 1.609 to get per-mile, since a mile is longer. The calculator shows both so you do not have to.
How can I estimate a race finish time?
Multiply your target pace by the race distance. At 5:00 per km, a 10 km would take about 50 minutes if you hold the pace.
Should I run at an even pace?
Even or slightly negative splits — the second half as fast or faster — are a common approach for steady efforts. Listen to your body and build up sensibly.
