Tipping made simple

The tip is a percentage of the bill before tax in most places. Multiply the bill by the tip rate, add it to the total, and divide by the number of people to split it evenly.

Total = Bill × (1 + tip%)  ·  Per person = Total ÷ people

Customs vary widely by country — in much of the US 15–20% is standard for table service, while in many other countries a service charge is already included and tipping is optional. When in doubt, check the receipt for a service charge before adding more.

Worked example

On a $50 bill at 18%, the tip is $9, making the total $59. Split between four people, that is $14.75 each.

Tipping without the awkward maths

Customs vary widely around the world. In much of the United States 15 to 20% is normal for sit-down service, while in many countries a service charge is already included or tipping is modest. When you travel, a quick look at local norms — and at the bill itself — saves confusion.

Splitting a bill fairly

  • An even split works when everyone shared roughly equally.
  • An itemised split is fairer when orders differed a lot: total each person's items, then apply the same tip percentage.
  • Check for a service charge before adding a tip on top, so you don't pay twice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Custom varies, but many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer and the calculator works from that.
What is a standard tip?
In much of the US, 15 to 20% is typical for table service. Many other countries include a service charge or tip far less, so check the bill before adding more.
How do I split the bill unevenly?
This tool splits evenly. For uneven shares, work out each person's portion of the bill and apply the same tip percentage to each portion.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
A service charge is added automatically by the venue; a tip is discretionary. If a service charge already appears on the bill, additional tipping is usually optional.
